Artona
Designed by Tobia Scarpa
The Artona armchair reaffirms design as a cultural act, showcasing its solid wood structure with understated presence, where material becomes both expression and language: strong, authoritative, reliable, and enduring.
Designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in the mid-1970s, Artona carefully balances rigour and comfort, protection and stability, qualities it conveys through its very presence. The armchair is conceived as a micro-architecture of vertical and horizontal planes: two “L”-shaped elements serve as both support and armrest, while the backrest introduces the only soft gesture, tempering the geometry of the design. The interplay of layered wood animates the surfaces, revealing refined cabinet-making expertise and a quality shaped by time, proportion and care.

"To design means to cast forward a thought, a will, a way of doing; it means to give while being in need of everything, it is a ride through an intimate dimension."
