Africa
Africa is a chair that encapsulates a perfect synthesis of structure, form, and functionality in a sculpture that highlights the constructive and communicative power of the material. A re-edition of the chair designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1975, Africa is a timeless project that celebrates the ancient craftsmanship of the cabinetmaker and the revival of wood in design. The solid canaletto walnut frame, with a thin rectangular section, reveals the full expressiveness of the veneer through the variation in its thicknesses, while the seat is masterfully curved and upholstered in leather or fabric. The backrest that is the true protagonist of the chair: crafted as a single piece and later divided and finished into two mirrored parts, it features delicate manual processes of roughing and smoothing, from which layers of different woods emerge, creating stunning chromatic effects thanks to the subtle black inlay. The backrest and the rear legs are only joined at the base, forming a wide gap that provides flexibility to the structure while evoking a totemic image.

Tobia Scarpa
Tobia Scarpa (Venice 1935) works in the field of architecture, design and restoration. Tobia Scarpa graduated in architecture from the University of Venice in 1969 and in that same year won the “Compasso d’Oro”. He has received many other awards as a designer. Some of his works are also on display in the world’s most important museums. With regard to architecture he works with public and private clients, such as the Benetton Group for which he designed the entire industrial complex. The designs for Benetton are still today considered an aesthetic-functional paradigm and a shining example of industrial architecture (work displayed at the 2012 Biennale in Venice).
